Moment 17: Doctor Who: The Armageddon Factor

Poll: Freeped

Last part of the Key of Time series. It was a six parter, but should have been four. The beginning was pretty good, as was the ending, but there was at least an hour of pointless wandering around in caverns/hallways.

Interesting points:

  1. The initial setting is a planet in the middle of a war started and continued with false intelligence by a stubborn leader with ulterior motives. The name of this planet is Atrios. Coincidence? Perhaps so, if you buy this theory.

  2. The Doctor encounters another Time Lord that he knew 450 years ago in school ("Class of 92") named Drax. Drax calls the Doctor by what I assume is his real name and refers to him getting his doctorate. Huh.

  3. I saw the ending of the series coming from the very first moment of the first episode. And they barely resolved it, with the Black Guardian merely left behind, not defeated. And why didn't they try to find the real White Guardian to turn over the Key?

This part was headed for a 5 star rating but it dragged on so long I ended up giving it 4. For the Key to Time series overall I also give a 4.

I also watched a 2005 two-parter that my friend shared. It was the one set in the Blitz with the mutated child looking for his mummy. Vcreepy and well-done. I still think the 2005 Doctor is a little too prone to spittle-emitting rants and tortured self-doubt, though. And Rose wears too much eye makeup. My sister wears too much. People think she's a whore.

The next Great Moment will be unrelated to Doctor Who.

I've heard great things about how funny Shaun is, but how gross is it? I have a pretty low tolerance for gore on both an ickiness level and a boredom level.

There's a lot of blood around, but it's all done in a humourous fashion...

Warning: Red Dwarf. If it claims to be the remastered version, don't bother. They messed with some of the effects, and turned it into flickervision.

Flickervision: An effect much loved by TV production wan^H^H^H luvvies which takes perfectly respectable, sharp, video signals and bungs them through a processor that drops alternate fields, then invents a new field by copying the other one, softens (ie blurs) it and puts in a colour cast. This is supposed to make it look just like it was shot on film, unfortunately what it actually makes it look like is soft, jerky, off-colour video.

This is different than other overseas TV how? by DesiredUsername (2.00 / 0) #5 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 09:20:13 AM EST
Maybe I've only watched outdated shows, but all European TV looks like crap to me. Well, except Doctor Who--maybe they've got modern equipment now.

Oh, it's different by Vulch (2.00 / 0) #7 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 09:54:38 AM EST

European stuff generally looks bad in the USA and other places using the same primitive TV standards due to crap standards convertors. PAL/50 to NTSC/60 and vice versa can be done well, but usually isn't. When I worked at the BBC it was policy not to accept standards converted programmes, we got either a print of the original film or a copy of the NTSC tape that we ran through the in-house convertors.

Hmmm by Vulch (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 11:47:18 AM EST

NTSC - 1953, PAL and SECAM - 1967

Mind, SECAM sucks as a studio format. Before everything went digital it was normal practice for studios in SECAM countries to be PAL.

Ickiest bit: by gazbo (2.00 / 0) #3 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 09:08:25 AM EST
Brief glimpse of zombies removing somebody's intestines while they're alive, purpose for the eating thereof, I assume.

HOWEVAR: rather than being gory it is just funny - not even a blip on the gorometer.  It looks like they're just pulling red foam from a box.

Could be OK by DesiredUsername (2.00 / 0) #4 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 09:18:46 AM EST
Mrs U's gorometer is pretty sensitive--and we'd probably be eating tacos.....maybe I should wait until I know she won't be watching.

Not suitable for very small midgets by Dr H0ffm4n (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 09:53:51 AM EST
Minor Midget (age 7) walked out because it was too gory. But Major Midget (age 10) handled it ok. WPKAW (age 30) hid behind cushions for some scenes.

Rated 15 in this country by Dr H0ffm4n (2.00 / 0) #13 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 11:48:41 AM EST
They would not bea able to see it at the cinema. But I've brought the midgets up to self-censor. Major Midget specifically requested to see it. I would not make them sit down and watch something, but at the same time I would not forbid them either.

I don't think the "gory" stuff happens until the end anyway.

Gore in SotD by Christopher Robin was Murdered (2.00 / 0) #10 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 10:27:20 AM EST
May, as I've mentioned several times, is not a horror fan. She especially dislikes copious amounts of gore. She does, however, love SotD and has seen it several times by this point.

There is actually quite a bit of blood splatter in Shaun, but the humor and plot move along and, by the end of the movie, you've pretty much forgotten all the gore in favor of remembering the jokes.

I wouldn't recommend eating during it if you're especially sensitive.

It's like the 'gore' in Monty Python. [nt] by yicky yacky (4.00 / 1) #16 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 02:11:36 PM EST

Good luck with Red Dwarf.. by Bob Abooey (2.00 / 0) #14 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 12:08:04 PM EST
I got that on loaner from a friend and couldn't even sit through one episode. It redefines the word bad. Really. I mean, I don't want to pre-prejudice you, but it's quite the stinkeroo.

Warmest regards,
--Your best pal Bob

I've seen some eps before by DesiredUsername (2.00 / 0) #15 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 12:10:05 PM EST
I only put it on my list to take it off my Recommendations and I only listed it here because it is a 4+ star Rec. I probably won't actually get it unless I'm bored.

as was said by LilFlightTest (2.00 / 0) #20 Mon Jan 16, 2006 at 01:57:38 PM EST
later seasons are better. when its just the few of them on the dwarf, it's a bit boring. when they get Kryton and everyone else, it gets better.

Donnie Darko : hated it.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? : Never heard of it.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Vol. 1: Disc 1 : Dunno
Looney Tunes: Vol. 1: Disc 1 : A++
Shaun of the Dead : A++
The Great Escape : A+
Arsenic and Old Lace : A
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid : A
The Muppet Movie : D
Red Dwarf: Series 1 : Series 1 sucks. The others are okay.

Shaun of the Dead is the best of this lot, followed by Great Escape, I think.

I am voting for Red Dwarf by riceowlguy (2.00 / 0) #19 Fri Jan 06, 2006 at 11:25:55 PM EST
simply because Buttercup was/is obsessed by it.  I found it to be pretty blah, but whatever.
